The owners of this property near Julianstown, Co. Meath had outgrown the existing cottage on the site and required additional space for their young family. The proposal involves a storey and a half extension to the rear, separated from the existing cottage by a new single storey ‘entrance link.’ The ridge height of the extension was kept as low as possible and dark coloured finishes were used, like dark stone cladding and black corrugated metal cladding, to ensure that the extension appeared subservient and separate to the existing cottage. The contemporary appearance of the extension contrasts strongly against the traditional form of the cottage which also strengthens the identity of the existing dwelling.
